Sitting in ‘Flashpoint’ restaurant a few weeks ago one Sunday afternoon enjoying their fabulous home-made Applestrudle and watching the kite surfers with their sails darting over the ocean like so many brightly coloured butterflies I was intrigued to see a man in a wheelchair make his way down the beach to the water’s edge. Another man helped him transfer to a specially adapted ski board and then dragged a kite to him at which point he darted off to join the other kite surfers racing around out to sea, his disability showing no sign of hindering his capacity, competitiveness or thrill seeking.
How amazing must he have felt! He might have been a former champion with the skills already finely honed or he might have been a novice, I don’t know! But if I was in his position I know I would want to have a go for myself and I know there must be many others out there who would relish the opportunity if it could be made possible for them.
We will offer opportunities at our very low rates to those who want to try something like this: kite surfing, sailing, cycling, horse riding, diving, snorkelling, dog walking, research guiding on the whale watching boats. We are not experts in this area but we are good people and only work with other ‘good’ people and know they will help in a spirit of seeing what we can do. All we ask is that people come with great can-do, have a go attitude. We want no whingers, born 'victims' or those with a sense of entitlement, the idea that the world owes them!!
Maybe it won’t work out and, if so, it will not be for a want of trying. But, maybe it will be amazing- that is life. What is for sure is that either way in the local pub that evening you will be the hero, for trying and not giving up!!
Who can we offer a helping hand to: those with physical disabilities; special needs folk; individual with mental health issues, children with reduced life expectancy, single mums and the recently bereaved.
